Long-lasting Protection Against Acid and Water Damage

Newly constructed concrete silage pit in Erskine, Alberta for agricultural feed storage.

Objective

The client required a high-performance solution to enhance the durability and longevity of newly poured concrete exposed to aggressive chemical conditions in silage pits. The primary objective was to mitigate early-stage deterioration such as spalling, scaling, surface crazing, mortar lift off and future surface erosion—commonly triggered by acid and moisture attack. PRO Tek Concrete was specified for its ability to function as both a curing agent, densifier, waterproofer and fortifier.

Process

Once the concrete reached sufficient set to support foot traffic, the EverTek team initiated the application of PRO Tek Concrete using backpack sprayers. To ensure uniform saturation and optimal performance, each pass was overlapped by 40–50%, promoting even distribution across the surface. The product was applied in controlled 1,600 sq ft sections, aligned with the sprayer’s 4-gallon capacity at 400 sq. ft. per gallon. Maintaining surface saturation was critical—treated areas were monitored and lightly resprayed as needed to ensure continuous wetness for a minimum of 20 minutes, which is essential for achieving full curing and densification benefits.

Solution

EverTek Canada applied PRO Tek Concrete as a wet cure solution immediately after the concrete pour. By slowing the hydration process, PRO Tek Concrete allowed the concrete to retain moisture, strengthening the slab and reducing early-age spalling, scaling, surface crazing, mortar lift off and future acid deterioration. This method created a dense, acid-resistant surface capable of withstanding the tough conditions of silage storage.

Outcome

Following application, the concrete surface retained a visibly dark appearance for several weeks—a clear indicator that PRO Tek Concrete effectively slowed the hydration process and initiated deep, controlled curing. As a result, the surface achieved enhanced density and waterproofing, delivering superior resistance to acid attack and environmental stressors. This proactive treatment significantly increased the durability and lifespan of the concrete in a demanding agricultural setting.

Challenges and Considerations

Preventing Damage, Not Just Repairing It: Unlike typical jobs that address already deteriorated concrete, this application was preventative. The client wanted to avoid future issues from the start.

Acidic Environment: Silage runoff contains lactic acid and other corrosive compounds that break down untreated concrete. A long-lasting, penetrating solution was necessary.

Moisture Control: Standard curing methods often fail in outdoor agricultural environments where concrete can dry too quickly. PRO Tek Concrete ensured moisture was retained for optimal curing.
