PRO Tek Concrete Strengthens Slaughterhouse Floors in Harsh Chemical & Acid Environment | Coutts, Alberta

Applying PRO Tek Concrete at a slaughterhouse in Coutts, Alberta to enhance durability, hygiene, and chemical resistance.

Objective

The client, a livestock processing facility in Coutts, Alberta, needed a durable solution to protect their concrete floors from rapid degradation caused by a high-acid, high -chemical and a high-moisture environment. In the past, organic matter, sanitation chemicals, and waste by-products had caused the concrete in similar settings to crack, spall, and break down quickly—leading to costly repairs and operational challenges.

With a brand-new 9,800 sq. ft. concrete pour planned, the client wanted a proactive, long-term solution to protect and  strengthen the concrete from day one. EverTek recommended PRO Tek Concrete for its proven performance in aggressive environments and its ability to enhance both durability and chemical resistance.

To protect the freshly poured 9,800 sq. ft. floor in this high-impact facility, EverTek used PRO Tek Concrete both as a curing agent, waterproofer, densifier and fortifier. By slowing hydration, the concrete retained internal moisture longer, which improved its density and strength. The surface stayed dark for several weeks—evidence of moisture retention and optimal curing. The final surface is fortified to handle heavy livestock traffic and repeated chemical exposure, dramatically extending the life of the concrete.

Process

Timing: PRO Tek Concrete was applied as soon as the new concrete was ready to bear weight.
Wet Curing: PRO Tek was used as a curing agent, slowing the hydration process and locking moisture inside the slab. This technique maintains surface darkness for weeks, preventing premature drying and shrinkage.
Absorption: The product penetrated deeply into the concrete, fortifying it from within and enhancing its internal density.
Long-Term Protection: The application created a crystalline internal matrix barrier, boosting the concrete’s resistance to acids, moisture, and organic material breakdown common in slaughterhouse operations.

Solution

Outcome

The application of PRO Tek Concrete significantly improved the concrete's surface integrity and chemical resistance. No surface crazing, spalling, scaling or mortar lift off.

  • The concrete developed higher density and moisture retention during the cure period.

  • The client now has a robust, long-lasting foundation capable of withstanding daily exposure to cleaning chemicals, waste products, and heavy livestock traffic.

The floor’s improved resilience means fewer maintenance issues and a longer service life—ultimately reducing operational downtime and repair costs.

Challenges and Considerations

High-Acid Exposure: Slaughterhouse operations regularly expose concrete to animal waste, organic matter, and acidic cleaning agents.

Moisture & Bacterial Contamination: Frequent washdowns and the biological nature of the facility create constant stress on flooring.
Need for Early Protection: Protecting the floor during its initial cure was critical to ensuring long-term performance and avoiding premature failures.

PRO Tek Concrete was chosen for its ability to combat these environmental pressures from the inside out, offering superior chemical durability while also acting as a wet cure solution—something traditional sealers or coatings could not achieve as effectively.
